The f/2.8 lens is a stop faster, but I don't find that important with digital cameras and the insane ISOs at which they still make great pictures. This 24-105mm lens is much easier to carry all day and zooms much more easily, makes tighter macro shots, has less flare, adds optical stabilization and zooms 50% longer — and costs half as much.

The Canon 24-105mm does not excel in the 70-105mm range, that is probably it's weakest area. That is one of the reasons why many professionals prefer the 24-70mm L with a 70-200mm L lens as opposed to using the 24-105mm L's extra focal length range(the other is f/2.8 on the 24-70mm).

Since this is an f4 lens rather than an f2.8, not having to stop it down to get sharp images is a definite plus. I compared the sharpness of the EF 24-105/4L IS at 24mm and f4 with a Canon EF 24/2.8 prime lens also at f4. Surprisingly the 24-105 zoom was sharper in the corners - though it did show more vignetting and higher levels of distortion. zOwXK1.
